The ambitious project “BLUE RESCUE – Biodiversity and Litter removal for cetaceans and Underwater Ecosystems” was officially presented on April 9th in Soverato, Calabria. Promoted and coordinated by CESRAM (Centro Studi e Ricerca Ambiente Marino), the initiative marks a definitive and scientifically rigorous step toward safeguarding marine biodiversity along the Calabrian Ionian coast. Co-funded by the European Union under the Calabria Regional Program FESR FSE+ 2021-2027 (Action 2.7.1), BLUE RESCUE aims to implement concrete conservation, restoration, and protection actions for critical habitats within the Natura 2000 Network.
A defining feature of the BLUE RESCUE initiative is the integration of cross-border scientific excellence. The project is significantly elevated by the strategic involvement and prestigious scientific support of Professor Adriana Vella. As a leading Conservation Biologist and Cetacean Research in Maltese and Central Mediterranean waters, Adriana Vella brings critical, peer-reviewed expertise in marine biodiversity and cetacean conservation to this central Mediterranean initiative.
Her direct involvement ensures that the methodologies applied—particularly in marine megafauna monitoring and habitat restoration—meet the strict, highly publishable standards required to effectively influence European marine conservation policies. By bridging CESRAM’s localized expertise with the University of Malta’s robust research capabilities, the project guarantees that its findings will contribute to high-ranking scientific analyses of Mediterranean ecosystems.
The project launching event, introduced and coordinated by CESRAM President and Scientific Director Maria Assunta Menniti, highlighted the necessity of backing rigorous scientific research with strong institutional support. This collaborative approach is vital to execute what will be the largest waste removal operation ever conducted in the Catanzaro Ionian Sea. The Regional Councilor for the Environment, Antonio Montuoro, also extended his formal support to the initiative. The fundamental backing of the local administrations of Soverato and Stalettì will be critical in executing the project’s logistical phases.
To ensure data integrity and maximize environmental impact, the operational core of Blue Rescue is structured around several targeted, scientifically validated phases:
- Targeted Cetacean Monitoring: Conducting systematic sighting campaigns and empirical data collection on the distribution and health of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and other cetacean species navigating the Calabrian Ionian Sea.
- Floating Macro-Litter Analysis: Recording, quantifying, and removing large floating debris that poses immediate entanglement or ingestion risks to marine megafauna.
- Seabed Survey and Remediation: Deploying specialized diving teams utilizing innovative underwater technologies to execute debris cleanup operations across the seafloors of the Marine Park “Baia di Soverato” and the SAC (Special Area of Conservation) “Fondali di Stalettì”.
- Standardized Scientific Categorization: Cataloging every extracted item strictly according to the European J-List protocol. This transforms the cleanup into a highly valuable, empirical database ready for regional implementation and potential academic publication.
- Environmental Education: Facilitating targeted awareness activities designed to bridge the gap between scientific research and the community, engaging citizens, educational institutions, and tourism operators.
